I have posted the text for Elbert Hubbard’s “A Message to Garcia” on my Squidoo page. I posted an introductory comment on this brief text in an earlier post.
I think this is a very powerful commentary on the Employer – Employee relationship and is as pertinent , perhaps more so, today as it was when originally written in 1914. I believe we, as a society, are so focused on working for the dollar, rather than our employer, that we forget that we can be replaced. Our value to the company employing us is exactly that, a value. If we neglect to contribute value to the company, we become redundant and replaceable.
As Employers, we must recognize that our Employers are, essentially, mercenaries and can leave our company for greener fields elsewhere. Although this fact may be less applicable under the current recessionary times, we may regret the manner in which we treat them now when opportunities become available at other, competing, companies in the near future.
I think this short text is well worth reading and pondering.
