You may not have the higest grades in your class, or the highest GPA in university but having a clearly defined goal to work toward is probably more advantageous than working simply for grades.
In the August 17, 2009 issue of “Business Week” (quoting an article from the Aug. 2 Boston Globe) there is a short article entitled “What’s Better Than Being Smart? Hanging Tough” (p. 6).
“Recent research indicates that old-fashioned virtues such as conscientiousness and perseverance are a better determinant of success than intelligence … (Angela Duckworth, psychologist at the University of Pennsylvania) “… noticed that the most successful were the ones who had identified a goal early on and stuck with it, rather than equally smart folks who flitted from one thing to another”.
The clear message is one that resonates throughout the field of personal development (self-help, self improvement), specifically “Identify and write down your goals in each area of your life”. Then, ideally, post them in one or more places where you can see them every day (your bathroom mirror, your car, your office, your locker, etc). In addition, you might want to make up a Vision board or even a Mind Movie for further emphasis and emotional impact.
Whatever you decide, set your goals and work toward them. If your plans change, adjust your goals accordingly, but SET YOUR GOALS!
